Photoshop 7 Rock Brush

Photoshop 7 - Star Brush Tutorial

Note: This brush utilizes three things the average user may not have available. If you do not have both a Wacom tablet with both pen and airbrush, you will not be able to use this brush fully. You might be able to modify the stylus wheel part to use pen tilt or something instead, however.

I've created a .abr that you can use for this. You can download it Here BUT it can ONLY be used with Photoshop 7 or higher.

  1. From the brushes dialogue, select the 55 pixel Star brush. If you don't see it immediately, go to the preset manager and load the default brushes by resetting brushes. It doesn't matter whether or not you append them, as long as you use that set.

Change the spacing from 1% to 25%. This spreads the brush out so that it's not all in a straight line.

  2. Now, go to the Shape Dynamics section, and plug in the settings as follows.

Under size jitter, select "Pen Pressure" for Control, and set Minimum diameter to 1%. This makes the sizes of the stars spread out from anywhere to 1% of 55pixels to 55 pixels, depending on how hard youp press on the tablet with your airbrush.

  3. Now, under Scattering, set the control to Stylus Wheel, and check Both Axes. This means when you wiggle your thumb wheel, your stars will spread out all over. Move the slider over to 1000%.

Set the Count Jitter to 84% and the Control under that to Fade. This adds some randomness into your star field that you can't put in yourself.

The bigger your image is, the better this will look. Your finished result should look something like this if it's on a small scale:
